Can’t Edit OBS MP4 Recording in Premiere Pro

I cannot Edit OBS Recording in Premiere Pro… and other software.

I wasted 12 frustrating hours yesterday trying to get my footage to work in Premiere Pro.

The 1-hour OBS recorded footage, though only 724MB, is impossible to edit.

Press play and I had to wait 10 seconds before it plays. Press stop, and I waited 5 seconds. I call that extreme laggy.

Not just Premiere Pro. I tried it on Final Cut Pro, Filmora, Premiere Elements, and VideoPad.

I can’t even convert it to a regular clip. VLC crashed. Quicktime refused to convert showing me an error. Premiere Pro took 14 hours just to re-export half of the 1-hour recording to a new format.

Then I googled for the solution. Most answers recommend an OBS setting that will work… to set constant bitrate instead of a variable bitrate.

Just for reference, here’s my erroneous OBS setting. Recording format MP4, Encoder Apple VT H264 Hardware Encoder and bitrate 10000.

Before this event, I have been recording in FLV format, then remux the FLV recording into MP4, which works fine.

Fine, but that’s not what I want to know now. I have already done my recording and I need to use this special recording now. It’s a recording of a one-time live class I did in front of a live audience, so there is no chance of re-doing.

Another Adobe forum thread recommends using HandBrake software to convert. Let’s try it.

I will update post the outcome.

Probably, it’s a sign for me not to use this recording to create my online course. Maybe it’s telling me to record a clean version without a live audience. Maybe.

The Outcome of Handbrake Conversion

Before I can take this snapshot, it’s already into 5%. That’s way less than 14 hours!

Done 72% in 15 minutes.

Done 95% in 21 minutes.

Finished encoding in 22 minutes!

This is the setting I used. 1920×1080, MP4 web optimised, H264, constant quality, 30fps.

The new file is only 210MB. Down from 724MB.

Did the converted clip work in Premiere Pro now?

PERFECT!!!!! Image quality is maintained. Scrubbing across the clip in the timeline is smooth as butter! Handbrake is the solution.

  1. Run into the exact problem and I will try to use the “x264” encoder and not the Apple Hardwaredecoder. I think thats the problem.
