Bluehost WordPress PHP Update Required – What To Do

I have waited several weeks to see if Bluehost will automatically update the PHP.

No change.

Then something happened. I got a notification about multiple failed logins to my websites. That could only be security issues because I didn’t update my WordPress. I can’t update my WordPress because I didn’t update my PHP.

It says: “You cannot update because WordPress 5.2 requires PHP version 5.6.20 or higher. You are running version 5.4.45.”

So here’s a documentation of what I did.

Updating PHP on Bluehost

Here are the instructions from Bluehost help page to update the PHP version.

First, I know my WordPress database is backed up using the “UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore” plugin.

  1. Login to my Bluehost account.
  2. Go to the Programming section.
  3. Click on PHP Config.
  4. Select PHP 5.6.
  5. Click SAVE CHANGES.

This message appears “Configuration Saved and New php.ini created”

I logged out from WordPress and logged in. The message is still there telling me to update the PHP.

I checked my Bluehost PHP version and confirmed it is now PHP version 5.6.40.

Let’s wait a little while. Maybe it takes time for the new configuration to propagate.
