According to the sales page, the first feature being highlighted is the new faster speed. Let’s ignore that because every new electronic device by default is always faster than its predecessor.

The second feature being highlighted is the “Ultra Vision Leica Triple Camera with upgraded AI capability”. Ok, this is something I am interested in.

When is the Huawei P40 launched?

The Huawei P40 is released together with the Huawei P40 Pro.

Release Date: 26 March 2020.

What’s new with the Huawei P40 Camera?

It has a triple camera configuration. Let me call the 3 cameras as standard, wide, and zoom.

What’s the standard camera specs?

• Resolution: 50MP – that’s very high for photography, but does that mean clearer images in videography?
• Sensor size: 1/1.28 inch – that’s very big, bigger than most regular camcorders, which means it will shoot better in low light.
• It’s the camera in the centre.

What’s the wide camera specs?

• Resolution: 16 MP – this is a standard resolution, nothing special, but better than the 12 MP cameras found on the iPhone.
• Macro shot: 2.5 cm – this feature is what I need many times to shoot close-ups of small subjects like labels and buttons.
• This is the camera on the left.
• How wide? How many degrees?

What’s the zoom camera specs?

• Resolution: 8MP – that’s pretty low as I would expect a higher resolution for a zoom lens, especially when it comes to digital zoom.
• Optical zoom: 3x – 3x is better than most other phones with only 2x zoom.
• Hybrid zoom: 5x – this is a combination of optical zoom and digital zoom.
• Maximum zoom: 30x – this is definitely digital zoom and I am not expecting much from a 8MP resolution sensor.
• This is the camera on the right.

What’s the upgraded AI capability?

Auto white balance artificial intelligence. I thought it’s predecessor is already doing a good job with detecting and reproducing natural color. So this is even better.

What about the selfie camera?

I see 2 front cameras. What are they?

What’s the main selfie camera specs?

• Resolution : 32MP – that means very clear selfies, which should be the way, especially for vloggers like me.

Will I buy the Huawei P40? Without Goolge applications, it’s of no use to me.

Will I buy the Huawei P40 for the camera? I will not buy the Huawei P40 for the camera, but instead, I will consider the higher-end model in the series, the Huawei P40 Pro.
