DIY Re-useable Face Mask for COVID-19

There is a shortage of surgical face masks to protect ourselves from the corona virus. So we learned from YouTube and made our own… https://www.facebook.com/AdrianVideoImage/videos/3056790761006133/

Of course, this solution is not to replace the surgical face mask.

It’s a great alternative when you really don’t have enough or none.

It can be completely hand sewn, but we used our sewing machine.

The cloth mask was be made using the materials we have at home.

  1. Cloth (preferably 100% cotton) cut from the clothing we seldom wear.
  2. Food Grade Kitchen Paper Towel (to be inserted inside the cloth mask).
  3. Mask rubber band (cut out from our disposable surgical face masks).
  4. Sewing machine (a simple sewing needle and thread will work too).
  5. An iron (to help press and create fold lines on the cloth).
  6. A pair of scissors.
  7. A printout of the paper pattern template.

Instructions:

  1. Download and print out the paper pattern.
  2. Cut out the paper pattern.
  3. Choose a good looking cloth for the front of the mask.
  4. Fold the cloth into half, with the good-looking side facing each other.
  5. Pin the paper pattern over the cloth and cut out the shape.
  6. Sew the wider curved edge base on the paper pattern short dotted lines.
  7. Unfold the cloth to reveal the good-looking side.
  8. Fold 1cm twice inwards at the bottom edge based on the long dotted lines in the pattern.
  9. Iron to firm up the 1cm fold.
  10. Sew up the 1cm fold.
  11. Choose any cloth for the back of the mask.
  12. Repeat steps 4 to 10.
  13. Lay the two cloth over each other front facing front.
  14. Sew up the 2 cloth together along 3 sides. Don’t sew the 1cm folded side.
  15. Flip over the cloth inside out. You can see the shape of the mask now.
  16. Iron to press the mask to shape.
  17. Sew on the rubber bands on both sides.
  18. Insert 2 layers of kitchen paper towel into the mask.

Will the kitchen paper towel work best as a filter? Check out other materials.

By the way, the face mask is not all we need to slow the spread of the virus.

We will need to have the following stuff…

Most importantly, practice self-hygiene and social distancing.
